Greek Expectations: Soulla’s Soho Return and Britain’s Hellenic Obsession

Soulla, the self-styled goddess of North London, has been back on the Soho stage this June with an update to the successful 2024 show, Greek Expectations. Created and performed by Alexander Theoharous, Soulla is a love letter to Greek family life, shaped by centuries of storytelling tradition and the exaggerated flair of a modern-day influencer. In Greek Expectations 2.0, a riotous celebration of heritage, hilarity, and Hellenic drama, Theoharous drew on the richness of Greek culture, including passion, pride, and poetry. The result was a show that’s both deeply personal and widely resonant.

Last year, Greek Expectations struck a chord with audiences because of the way Soulla channelled the laughs into something timeless. In a Britain that remains endlessly fascinated by Greece, from mythology and history to food, audiences found comfort and connection in the chaos. Soulla brings to life not just one Greek woman, but the echoes of Medea, Aphrodite, and every “yiayia” who ruled her kitchen like Mount Olympus. The result is a show that’s both a cultural tribute and a universal comedy triumph.

Britain Goes Greek in 2025

In 2025, Britain’s enduring fascination with Greece is more vibrant than ever, as festivals, fairs, and cultural showcases across the country highlight Greek heritage. From the streets of Droitwich Spa to the bustling heart of North London, thousands have already gathered this year to celebrate all things Hellenic, with more to come later in the year.

The Festival of Greek Culture, held in Worcestershire in May, brought an authentic slice of Greece to Vines Park with traditional music, dance, food, and crafts. It drew up to 20,000 visitors eager to experience the spirit of the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, June’s 40th Annual CyWineFest in London proved just how alive and thriving the UK’s Greek Cypriot community remains, mixing folklore and grilled Souvlaki with live performances and youth dance troupes.

At the same time, Greece’s literary and intellectual legacy continued to make waves in the capital, with a strong presence at the 2025 London Book Fair. The Greek Pavilion became a hub for contemporary authors, translators, and academics, celebrating both modern voices and the classical roots of Western storytelling.

Greek mythology is also alive and well. Nowhere was this more apparent than at this year’s Met Gala, where the myth of Narcissus informed everything from the midnight blue carpet to floral installations scaling the Temple of Dendur. That same mythological thread runs through today’s entertainment, featuring more than ever in films, books, and even gaming or iGaming. Popular games at casinos in United Kingdom such as Age of the Gods roulette, have taken their cues from ancient Greece, with the likes of Athena and Hades getting the spotlight. The popularity of the theme has also seen companion titles like Age of the Gods Spin A Win capture the attention of iGaming players too. Elsewhere, Netflix’s Kaos, a surreal modern retelling of Olympian power struggles, enjoyed record-breaking viewing figures in the UK.

A Welcome Return to the Soho Stage

In a year when Britain is embracing Greek culture more than ever – from myth-inspired fashion and blockbuster streaming series to food festivals and literary triumphs – Greek Expectations 2.0 acts as both a mirror and a celebration. Soulla’s return to the Soho stage couldn’t be better timed.
