Streets of Soho London

Berwick Street

Berwick Street, found in the heart of Soho London, is one of the city’s most characterful historic streets. Dating back to the 18th century, it takes its name from James FitzJames, the 1st Duke of Berwick, an illegitimate son of King James II. The street quickly became a bustling market spot, known for its independent shops and lively atmosphere. Today, Berwick Street Market, one of London’s oldest, still trades with fruit, flowers and street food stalls that serve both locals and visitors.

The area blends old charm with modern energy. While many traditional shops remain, new fashion boutiques, vinyl record stores, and creative agencies now line the pavement. One standout is the iconic Phonica Records, a favourite for DJs and collectors. Berwick Street is also home to newer eateries and coffee spots that attract a younger crowd, giving the area a fresh but grounded vibe.

Public transport is excellent—Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road stations are just a short walk away, making it easily accessible from anywhere in central London. Over the years, it has drawn attention not only for its culture but also for featuring on the cover of Oasis’s 1995 album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?

Berwick Street remains a key part of Soho’s identity—lively, creative and never out of touch with its roots.
