About Kumori

Kumori turned a hit pop-up into a permanent Soho flagship in April 2026, opening a compact, counter-led handroll bar on Denman Street. Founded by Marc Flekei, it puts the temaki handroll centre stage: rice and fillings rolled to order in front of you and passed straight across the counter so the seaweed stays at its crispest.

As a specialist Japanese handroll bar in Soho, it is built for immediacy and a bit of theatre. The thirty-odd seats face the chefs, the rolls arrive one at a time still warm from a blowtorch finish, and the room leans into a moody, listening-bar aesthetic with a proper soundtrack. Cocktails, sake and wine round out a fast, high-energy sitting.

What to expect from this Japanese handroll bar in Soho

Expect a made-to-order run of temaki: burnt salmon, spicy scallop, foie gras with unagi and other experimental fillings, most rolls sitting around ten to twelve pounds, with set menus of three, four or five rolls. There are caviar bumps for a treat and a tight drinks list. It is counter-only and best eaten as each roll lands, so it suits a solo perch or a pair rather than a big group.

The chef and the room

Reviewers have marked it out as a cut above the average sushi spot, from the design to the service, and it has quickly become one of Soho's buzzier openings. It sits among Denman Street's Japanese and late-night kitchens, near ramen specialist Shoryu Ramen, with more of the area's tables in our Soho restaurants listings.

How a visit works

Kumori is a counter-only, roughly 30-seat handroll bar on Denman Street, best booked ahead given the size, though walk-ins can get lucky. Menus and reservations run through its channels; the opening was reviewed by Hot Dinners and The Infatuation.
