Archer Street is short, and easy to walk past, but it has held its own corner of Soho through every change the area has been through. It takes its name from James Archer, a local figure thought to have had a hand in shaping this part of London back in the 18th century. From there it followed Soho's arc, artistic at first, then more about entertainment and business.
You reach it in a couple of minutes from Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square tube. Small as it is, the street pulls real weight after dark. The Archer Street Bar is the name people know, with live performances and proper cocktails that bring in locals and visitors in equal measure. Round the corner sits the Ham Yard Hotel, a draw for the creative crowd. No famous names are tied directly to the street, but its mark on London's theatre and music world is there if you look.
Today it runs on that Soho mix of old and new, boutique bars sitting alongside creative work. Worth a wander to see who has set up shop here.
