Charing Cross Road was cut through in the late 19th century to ease central London's traffic, and it still runs the full stretch from Trafalgar Square up to Tottenham Court Road. It has always carried a name for books, theatre and entertainment.
The landmark people reach for first is Foyles, the bookshop that has kept readers happy for decades. More recently the area has changed shape. @sohoplace opened here, the first purpose-built West End theatre in over 50 years, with a 602-seat auditorium. Next to it sits the Now Building, part of the Outernet district, home to Europe's largest LED screen installation. Close by, the Palace Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue runs Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which pulls fans in from everywhere. And at the corner of Cranbourn Street stands the Hippodrome Casino, the UK's largest entertainment and casino venue, with gaming, dining and live shows.
Transport is easy. Tottenham Court Road Station sits at the northern end, Charing Cross Station to the south, both offering Underground and rail. With that reach and that spread of attractions, the businesses lining the road are well worth a wander.
