Smith's Court is a small courtyard reached by a passage off Brewer Street, with a second way through to Great Windmill Street. It was laid out as the surrounding streets were built and is clearly marked on John Rocque's map of 1746. The name comes from its early use as a yard for stables and smithies.
In the 1880s one side was still lined with stables and the other held a horse hospital, with cabinet makers and leather workers in between. The garages that followed survived until around 2010, when the court was converted into the cluster of independent cafes, shops and small restaurants found there now.
