Lowndes Court is a short pedestrian passage running west off Carnaby Street towards Newburgh Street, in the grid behind Regent Street. It takes its name from William Lowndes, who acquired land here in the 1690s and gave his name to Lowndes Market, established nearby in the 1720s for meat, fish and vegetables.
Several houses in and around the court date from a redevelopment of about 1820; numbers 27, 28 and 28a Carnaby Street, on the corner, are Grade II listed. Today it is a narrow run of small shop units feeding the Carnaby retail district, with a three-storey building at the Newburgh Street end still carrying painted decoration from the 1960s.
