Ramillies Place is a short street near the northern edge of Soho, close to Oxford Circus and the run of shops along Oxford Street. It belongs to the small grid of streets, including Ramillies Street and Hills Place, named after the Battle of Ramillies of 1706, one of the Duke of Marlborough's victories in the War of the Spanish Succession. Several Soho streets in this corner carry names from that campaign.
The Place is a quiet working back street rather than a shopping frontage. It serves the rear of the large Oxford Street and Great Marlborough Street buildings and has long held a mix of offices, service entrances and small businesses tucked away from the main pedestrian flow. Its scale is modest, and it is easy to miss when walking the busier routes nearby.
Its value is in how it sits within Soho's northern fringe. A few steps away is Great Marlborough Street, with Liberty and the approach to Carnaby Street beyond. Ramillies Place itself offers the contrast that runs through much of Soho: a plain, functional lane immediately behind some of the West End's busiest shopping streets.
