Regent Place is a short turning on the western edge of Soho, set just off Regent Street in the W1B postcode near its southern end by Piccadilly Circus. It is a small connecting street rather than a through route, and its character comes almost entirely from the grander thoroughfare beside it.
Regent Street itself was laid out from 1819 under the direction of John Nash, named after the Prince Regent, the future George IV. The new road was conceived partly to link Carlton House with the developments around Regent's Park, and in practice it drew a firm line between fashionable Mayfair to the west and the denser streets of Soho to the east. The original southern stretch carried the Quadrant colonnades, a covered walkway that was later removed.
Today every building along Regent Street is listed, and the surrounding blocks hold shops, restaurants and offices. Regent Place serves this commercial setting, giving access and frontage to premises that face or back onto the main street. For visitors it functions as a quiet pause between the heavy footfall of Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus and the closer-packed lanes of Soho proper that begin a little to the east.
