Soho Square is a historic public square in central Soho, dating to the late 17th century. It was first laid out in 1681 as King's Square, named in honour of King Charles II, whose statue still stands at its centre. Over time people simply called it by the surrounding area, and the name became Soho.
With its peaceful garden and classic Georgian architecture, the square offers a brief break from the pace of central London. It has long drawn creative minds. Karl Marx lived nearby, and the square once housed the offices of Paul McCartney's MPL Communications, which adds a musical note to its story.
Today it holds a mix of elegant offices, cultural institutions and a few select businesses. The British Board of Film Classification is based here, along with some well-regarded production houses. It is not packed with shops. Its character comes from that blend of history, media and green space. Transport is within easy reach, with Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus stations both a few minutes away. The handful of businesses around the square are worth knowing.
