The fall of bingo halls and the rise of online bingo

24 June 2024By Aidan Moss3 min read

Bingo is a game that’s loved by many people around the world. The UK has around 3.5 million registered players and technological advancements are making it more accessible than ever. This industry is huge and recent data showed it to generate almost £500 million in 2022, proving just how lucrative it can be for providers.

Online bingo is now one of the best ways to enjoy the game, giving total access wherever you are. This has caused bingo halls to lose popularity over the years, however, so we’re going to take a closer look at how this has happened. Continue reading to learn more about the fall of bingo halls and the rise of online bingo.

When did bingo become popular?

The first instances of the game date back to 1530s Italy, where it is still played today. It then rose in popularity in the U.S. as it was played to raise funds in 1930s churches. There are, however, records of the game being played under different names in the UK before then, showing just how long this game has been enjoyed.

The rise of Bingo halls

In the UK, bingo halls were established in the 1960s but it was not until 1968 that betting could be involved when people play. The 1970s saw bingo become one of the most popular leisure activities in the country with millions of regular players up and down the country.

When did they fall?

There was a decline in the number of attendance at bingo halls during the 1980s mainly due to bingo clubs being kept under tight restrictions like the indoor smoking ban, which affected the number of people visiting the clubs.

Bingo halls continued to fall and the development of online bingo has only contributed further to this. No longer do players need to go to physical spaces when they can play from the comfort of their own homes.

The rise of online bingo

In the modern day, there has now been an increase in bingo players. This is partly down to the ability of people to play bingo online using online platforms and apps. All they need is a reliable internet connection and sufficient funds to join a game. Bingo can then be enjoyed on a commute to work, during a lunch break or late at night when the physical bingo spaces are closed.

Will physical bingo return?

There’s a strong crowd that still visit these halls, but the current trajectory looks damning for in-person bingo. Some people believe they’re on the brink of extinction, which should see online sites that offer this game become more popular.

There are some other options available to those who want to play in person. This includes Bongo’s Bingo, which combines music, live performances and bingo for an entertaining time with friends.
