Great Windmill Street has a strong link to Soho's past, starting with its name. A windmill stood nearby in the 17th century, grinding grain for local bakers, and the street kept the name long after the mill had gone. As Soho grew, the street leaned into entertainment, arts and culture, and built a bold character of its own. Piccadilly Circus station is a short walk off.
In the 18th century the anatomist William Hunter opened a private medical school here, which gave the street a place in academic history too. Today the old and the new sit together. Among the names people know is the legendary Windmill Theatre, famous for its wartime performances and for launching plenty of careers in show business. There is also the Soho branch of Flat White, the independent coffee brand, which keeps a loyal local crowd.
The street still runs on Soho's creative pulse, close to the action but with a feel all its own. Worth a look at the businesses set up along it.
