Livonia Street is a short street in the western part of Soho, close to Poland Street. It was laid out in 1736 as part of the redevelopment of Doghouse Close, and was first called Bentinck Street after the family name of the Duke of Portland. The leases for all fourteen sites in the street were granted by the Duchess and Duke of Portland in 1736 and 1737.
The street was renamed Livonia Street in 1894, a change presumably made in geographical reference to neighbouring Poland Street, since Livonia is a historic region on the eastern Baltic. An old street sign survives on the street marked 'Bentinck Street 1736', carrying a woven monogram beneath a ducal coronet, a reminder of the original name and of the Portland family that built it.
Livonia Street is small and quiet, set among the workshops, offices and small businesses of western Soho. It lies a short walk from Poland Street and the markets and shops of Berwick Street.
