Berwick Street sits right in the middle of Soho, and it has done since the 18th century. The name comes from James FitzJames, the 1st Duke of Berwick, an illegitimate son of King James II. Markets took hold here early on, alongside a run of independent shops, and that trading spirit never really left. Berwick Street Market is one of the oldest in London and still going, with stalls of fruit, flowers and street food.
The old and the new sit side by side. Traditional shops have hung on while fashion boutiques, vinyl record stores and creative agencies moved in around them. Phonica Records is the one DJs and collectors make a point of visiting. Newer cafes and eateries pull in a younger crowd, though the street keeps its feet on the ground.
Getting here is easy. Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road are both a short walk away. And yes, this is the street on the cover of Oasis's 1995 album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Have a wander through what the traders and shops along here are offering.
