Lexington Street is a short, character-filled road in central Soho, a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus stations. Its roots reach back to the 18th century, and it was named after the Earl of Lexington, a title tied to British nobility. Small in size, but it has long punched above its weight.
The area was once a lively hub for craftsmen and small trades. Over time it became a blend of independent shops, creative studios and respected eateries, and it still carries that independent streak. Two places stand out. Mildreds, a much-loved vegetarian restaurant serving bold plant-based dishes since 1988, and BAO, known for its Taiwanese steamed buns and a minimalist take on East Asian dining.
You can reach it on foot from several Underground lines, which makes it a practical stop when you are out in central London. It also sits near Carnaby Street and the wider West End shopping and nightlife. No major celebrities are confirmed to have lived here, but the street has played its part in the city's habit of reinventing itself. Plenty of businesses along here reward a slower wander.
